AQA GCSE Physics: Domestic Electricity and Safety

Covers the difference between direct and alternating potential difference, the features of the UK domestic mains electricity supply (voltage and frequency), and the wiring and safety features of a standard three-pin plug (live, neutral, earth wires, and the fuse).
A dramatic, close-up photograph of a hand carefully inserting a UK three-pin plug into a modern wall socket. The plug's casing is slightly transparent or open, subtly revealing the brown, blue, and green-and-yellow striped wires inside, with a sharp focus on the plug and wires.

Lesson#1
In this deck, we'll explore the electricity that powers our homes. You'll learn the difference between the two main types of electrical current, the specific voltage and frequency of the UK mains supply, and most importantly, the safety features built into a standard three-pin plug, including the roles of the live, neutral, and earth wires.
Lesson#2
Let's start with the two types of current. The first is direct current, or DC. This is the type of current you get from a battery. In a DC circuit, the charge flows in one direction only.
Quiz#3
What is the term for an electric current that always flows in the same direction?

direct current

Lesson#4
The other type of current is alternating current, or AC. This is the type of electricity supplied to our homes through the mains. In an AC circuit, the current is constantly changing direction, moving back and forth. This is because the potential difference of the supply alternates between positive and negative.
Quiz#5
What is the term for an electric current that is constantly changing direction?

alternating current

Quiz#6
Is the UK mains electricity supply an example of alternating current or direct current?

alternating current
